The Bernina Express – A Spectacular Day Trip
Going from Italy to Switzerland and passing through Italian, Romansch and German-speaking areas, The Bernina Express from Tirano to St. Moritz is beautiful at any time of year. My most recent trip was in December, so Lago Bianco (White Lake) and Lej Nair (Black Lake) were both ice-covered white. And my orange rain boots didn’t cut it for a hike to the glacier, so I plan to return another time to take advantage of that and other hikes.
While it is possible to drive from Tirano to St. Moritz, it is worth relaxing on the train to enjoy its historical and engineering significance, passing over 52 bridges, through 13 tunnels and going from an elevation of 429 meters above sea level to 2253.
The ticket is valid for 24 hours so it is possible to spend a night in a village along the way, such as Poschiavo. I recommend buying a ticket in advance, especially if it’s not the shoulder season.
I stayed in the wonderful town of Tirano, worth discovering by foot following the map provided by the tourist information booth at the train station, right beside the Bernina Express station.
