Prep for a Trip to Venice – Things to Read and Watch
Wandering around Venice is like a walk through history. And along with that history is architecture, art, food and culture.
When I walk into any church, I wonder which pieces of art were created by a master, who was the architect, what was going on in the city at the time.
When I stare at the palazzos along the canals, I wonder which wealthy family inhabilited them, what trade did they do, how did they figure into the city’s life and politics. And what treasures are contained within them?
And along with all that, I always wonder what life was and is like for the citizens of Venice. I like to imagine her at different times throughout her history.
More than anywhere else, a visit to Venice benefits from doing advance research. I don’t mean just guide books (honestly, they sometimes put me to sleep), but historical novels and films and even documentaries, anything that gives you a feel for the history of the place and helps to open your eyes to the wonders that are everywhere in Venice.
For Venice, I particularly enjoy watching the film Dangerous Beauty which takes place in the 1500’s. For a great opening in Venice complete with a boat chase through the canals, watch The Italian Job.
If you prefer to read, I recommend the book, Miss Garnet’s Angel. I will have to now reread it to see if I went to the same places Miss Garnet did, and what I missed paying attention to in those places!
Of course, guide books do have a place and my favorite is always the DK Eyewitness Guide to Venice. If you have only a day or two, or want the short version, try the DK Eyewitness Top 10 Venice.
