Errand Day in Dubrovnik

Life on the road isn’t all sight-seeing.  Even when in a stunning place like Dubrovnik, errands need to be done, like getting my seriously cracked screen on my iphone fixed and finding a shoe repair to put the soles back on my boots! But it’s more fun because it still takes me through different parts of town and lets me experience what the locals do.

I am staying outside of old town, sort of in Lapad.  Armed with a few addresses of fix-it places, I walked along Ulica Iva Vojnovia, which overlooks the sea, the white, craggy cliffs and the stairs leading down to a tiny beach.  I spotted some holiday apartments with beautiful sea views and wished I was there, instead of the “sea view” that was promised in the rental apartment – seen only by leaning out over a corner of the balcony!

My first stop was unsuccessful but I was directed to another electronics shop, which I actually found because it was next door to the tiny Bosančica shop, a place that makes burek, the flaky pastry that comes in either a cigar or snail shape, and is usually filled with either spinach, cheese or meat.  Saved by my interest in food! Unfortunately, the electronics shop was closed but I ate 4 pumpkin burek, so a lucky find!

For the next shop option, I found the shortcut down to the harbor – taking the stairs instead of walking the switchback streets.  Two more electronic shops were closed but the shoemaker was open, along the harbor by the ferry.  And a walk along the water is always worthwhile.

After failing to find the farmer’s market, I picked up some groceries at the Pemo “hipermarket”, and lugged them up the 250 steps to the apartment.  Then back down with the stairs with my boots to the shoe repairman, who it turns out could not fix them before I leave Dubrovnik. After another stop at Tommy supermarket to purchase treats like Paski Sir (cheese from Pag Island) and truffle salami from Istria, I walked up the same 250 steps again to home.

I could say that the morning was wasted because nothing got down that I wanted to be done, but I did some sight-seeing, talked to locals, and had a lot of good exercise, so actually it was a good morning, just not what one expects to do in Dubrovnik!
