Ca’ Rossa – Organic Wine of Roero in Piedmont, Italy

“Do what you love and everything else will follow” could be the motto for Cantina Ca’ Rossa in Canale, in the Roero region of Piedmont, Italy. Certainly this is what Angelo Ferrio has done and continues to do, producing great red and white wines and one sweet wine that come from the heart and speak to the heart. You can literally taste the passion and love with which they are made.

The wines are made to express the grapes, without addition of anything at all, ever. The vineyards and wines are certified “biologic,” because this is how Angelo Ferrio chooses to make wines. He has had his vineyards since 1995, growing the grape varieties of the native white Arneis, and of the reds Barbera and Langhe Nebbiolo, and the sweet wine Birbet.

And not only the expression of each grape, but the expression of the different characteristics of each vineyard. For example, one Arneis is from sandy soil and another from white soil, one nebbiolo from red soil and another from white.

Then, of course, there is the weather, making each year unique. Until 2016, 2015 was thought to be the best vintage yet. But 2016 shows even greater promise. The grapes are sweet with a lot of juice and the cantina is excited about the harvest. And having tasted and loved the 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 wines, I am really excited for the 2016 vintage!
