Remembrance Day Memory – Margraten, the Netherlands
In the Netherlands, there is an “Adopt a Grave” program for American War Cemetery and Memorial in Margraten, the Netherlands and it is the only American cemetery in the country. There are 8,301 graves there, and each one of them is adopted by a Dutch citizen who visit and tend their adopted grave, and decorate them with flowers to express their on-going gratitude for these soldiers.
There is also the Walls of the Missing, inscribed with the names 1,722 Americans.
I took this photo at the Margraten cemetery near Maastricht, the Netherlands, a few years ago. And I share it today in honor of Nov. 11, Remembrance Day.
This gratitude and care continues, more than 70 years later.
